In 2011 the Institute was looking to provide an event focused on the elderly and isolated within our community. It was agreed that we would run a lunchtime event aimed at those in Care and Residential Homes, Sheltered Housing complexes and over 60's clubs. Initially it was thought we might attract 40 to 50 people but at its height we have seen over 240 people attend over two days. Working with network 50 plus the club is now used as a vehicle to inform older people of services and issues that can impact on their every day life. To date we have had the Expert Patient programme, Crime in the community, Swalec, the RSPCA and many more organisations give talks to the group and provide assistance on many issues.
The lunch club itself is held on the last Wednesday of every month and as well as a three course lunch the patrons are treated to a cabaret and prize bingo. The club also run a raffle and the patrons provide details of charities and local organisations they would like to donate to. The cost per ticket is £6. If you are involved in running a care or residential home, are the warden at a sheltered housing complex or run a group for the elderly and want to find out more about the lunch club:
