Llanhilleth (St.Illtyd) Scout Group
The Group which is based in the primary school opened early in 2006 and now has about twenty Cub Scouts (8 to 11 years old) and approximately eight Scouts 10 ½ to 14 years old). We plan over the next few weeks to open a colony for Beaver Scouts (6 to 8 years old). We also have three ‘Young Leaders, these are Explorer Scouts (14 to 18 years old) who are training to become leaders and help the adult leaders in the group to run the sections. At the moment we have five adult leaders, but we are always looking for more help. So if you want to become a leaders or just help, come along and talk to us.
The youngsters this year have attended several camps and tried rock climbing, canoeing at or own camp site in Bryn Bach Parc and many other exciting activities. This year is the centenary of the Scout movement and most of the youngsters, joined with the rest of Blaenau Gwent Scouts at a celebratory camp at the end of May. Due to the poor weather on the Sunday, many activities were postponed but many of the youngsters took the opportunity for more canoeing. As one said ‘When you turn a canoe over it does not matter if it's raining, you get wet'.
Over the next three weeks youngsters between 6 and 8 can come along on a Thursday night between 5.30 and 6.30 to try out being a Beaver Scout. There is no charge and no commitment on their part.

Llanhilleth Scouts at Gwent Trek 2007
On the weekend of 5th to 7th October 2007 the Scouts from Llanhilleth took part in the Gwent Trek Expedition. A gruelling hike from Cwmbran to Usk through the woods and fields using footpaths rather than roads. At various points throughout the route they were stopped to carry out set tasks, everything from Knot Tying, Fire Lighting, first aid etc. On these tasks and their navigational skills they were measured and scores awarded.
Of the thirty two teams that entered from across Gwent, Llanhilleth came tenth, an excellent acheivement considering it was their first attempt at ‘Gwent Trek'.
The group also welcomes Lynne and Ashley Cooper, two experienced leaders from Derby who have recently moved into the area.
The Scouts team was trained by Ashley and Chris George the other scout leader. The whole group was fed by Lynne Cooper and Angie George, and they were the best fed team in the competition.
