The Institute is the third phase of the Blaenau Gwent Initiative LARS Scheme(Llanhilleth Area Regeneration Scheme).

LARS Scheme

The Llanhilleth Area Regeneration Scheme has the following objectives:
  • To raise educational standards
  • To provide a centre for Lifelong Learning

  • To encourage business development

  • To encourage the development of a healthy lifestyle

  • To revitalise the centre of the community

  • To provide a cultural focus for the community

The new St Illtyd's Community School, is directly linked to the Llanhilleth Miners Institute. Also included in the project is improved access to the village, the construction of new business units, with major landscaping to create a village square.  These will all link to the construction of a new railway station, within the village, work has already started on the railway station.

Communities @ One IT project

Communities@One

A grant from the Communities@One programme has enabled IT projects to be run throughout Llanhilleth and the surrounding areas of Aberbeeg, Brynithel, Swfrydd and Six Bells.  mailto:Communities@One is a Welsh Assembly Government Initiative to help people get access to new technology, funded by Objective One and two; and the Wales Co operative Centre. IT equipment is installed in the Institute as well as in local community centres. The grant also funds two posts; a training officer and IT technician. Llanhilleth Institute will deliver the project in partnership with Blaenau Gwent Council and Communities First. The grant has enabled us to run courses including basic IT skills, digital photography, family history, Internet training, and many more.  Specialist software will also be provided within the Institute to assist a multitude of needs such as dyslexia, limited manual dexterity, and visual impairment 

 

Esmee Fairbairn Foundation

Esmee Fairbairn
Llanhilleth Institute has accessed an Education grant from Esmee Fairbairn Foundation to carry out unaccredited courses in all areas of education for the first year. Courses include Arts, crafts, creative writing, dance, yoga etc.  

 

Coalfields Regeneration Trust

The Coalfields Regeneration Trust
Llanhilleth Institute has accessed a CRT 'Bridging the Gap' grant for equipment within the Dance Hall. This grant will support the staging and seating within the Hall and provide the fqcilities to hold many community, arts, music events.


Awards for All

AwarsForAllWales
Llanhilleth Institute has accessed an Awards for All grant for equipment for the Community Cafe and Training rooms. This equipment includes tables and chairs enabling us to run a multitude of courses, training and host meetings, etc.


Millennium Stadium Charitable Trust

Millenium
In Partnership with Communities First, Llanhilleth Institute has accessed this grant to run a 'Stute Idol' project with the young people across the Llanhilleth and Six Bells wards. This project will commence in October and culminate in a performance at Christmas time in Llanhilleth Institute. Please see project pages for details.
